Barca crash out of cup after extra-time defeat by Athletic Bilbao

Ansu Fati’s injury in the second period of regular time at San Mames increased Barca’s disappointment in the defeat. Athletic Bilbao will join Rayo Vallecano, Real Sociedad, Real Betis, Valencia, Mallorca, Cadiz, and Real Madrid in Friday’s final eight draw.

Barca had hoped to follow Real Madrid there. Read on for more of the shocking sports news in Singapore.

Barca has now been booted out

Athletic Bilbao defeated Barcelona 3-2 in extra time to knock them out from the Copa del Rey competition last Thursday. It was Ferran Torres’ initial goal for the club.

Fati returned to action earlier in the month after a two-month absence due to a hamstring ailment; he had previously missed 10 months due to a knee injury.

Fati’s absence from the Barca team’s top-four ambitions would be a major setback. If you happen to miss the recent Singapore news on this subject, additional time was requested by Pedri as well.

It took Real Madrid an additional 30 minutes to defeat Elche 2-1 despite the fact that Marcelo’s red card prompted the defending champions to rally from behind with 10 men. Eden Hazard scored the game-winning goal. After Elche had taken the lead through Gonzalu Verdu, Isco snatched an equalizer.

They did their absolute best against Bilbao

Atletico Madrid was hoping to join Real Madrid in the last eight; instead, Athletic Bilbao advances to Friday’s round of 16, when it will be joined by Rayo Vallecano, Real Sociedad, Real Betis, Valencia, Mallorca, Cadiz, and Real Madrid.

In light of Sevilla’s defeat to Real Betis in the semifinals, Madrid will be heavy favorites to win the Copa del Rey for the first time since 2014, under Ancelotti’s first season in charge.

Defending their Copa del Rey crown was Barcelona’s greatest hope of securing a trophy this season. They’ve lost La Liga and the Spanish Super Cup to Real Madrid, leaving only the Europa League as a plausible path to a trophy for them.

According to many experts on sports news Singapore, they really need to put in the effort and be bold, Xavi Hernandez urged them to do. As though they were playing a game of heads or tails, they needed to change their demeanor.

Iker Muniain’s 102nd-second goal left San Mames reeling as he turned and bent the ball into the far corner after gathering Nico Williams’ cross at the penalty spot.

When Fernando Torres slipped past Oscar De Marcos and unleashed a beautiful shot through the net within the 20th minute, Barcelona leveled at 1-1.

What comes next

Despite a late long-range effort by Inaki Williams, the game’s most dramatic moments were yet to come. An 86th-minute goal by Inigo Martinez gave Athletic a narrow victory over Barcelona, but Gerard Pique was on hand to deny them the victory.

When Dani Alves bicycle booted Jordi Alba’s cross back in, Barcelona managed to find a way back in the 93rd minute. Pedri’s strike upon this run was just too strong for Julen Agirrezabala’s outstretched hand to stop it.

Barca celebrated as if it had won the game and expected the SG news headlines, but extra time and injuries loomed largely. After Fati had left, Pedri requested his departure as well.

With just over two minutes remaining, Alba was sliding to his right to save Nico Williams’ cross, and Jose Munuera ruled to the spot after watching a replay of the incident. Muniain swam left, Ter Stegen dove right.

Real Madrid came from behind to overcome Elche with 10 men thanks to a goal from Eden Hazard, who hasn’t scored in eight months. In recent months, the Belgian has indeed been fit but has remained on the outside of Ancelotti’s squad, and he even started this cup game on the bench.

With extra time looming and a goal to his name, the 31-year-old midfielder hopes this is the start of a second-half comeback. For more sporting news today in Singapore, you can find them all here.
