Lead Single Premiere

The commercial premiered in the Game Six of the NBA Finals. US sprinter Richardson, who was in the ad, missed out on the Tokyo Olympics due to being suspended for being positive on a marijuana test.

The video was scored and edited by West himself which shows Richardson, who had been expected to cause a lot of attention in the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. The 21-year old sprinter revealed that she used cannabis as a way to deal with her mother’s death.

Tracklisting Teaser

West also posted on Instagram a partial tracklist of “Donda” which was revealed to have at least 15 songs. Among the tracks included was the title song “Donda”, “Lord I Need You”, “Off The Grid” and “Keep My Spirit Alive”. Included in the tracklist are the newly added songs, “Pure Souls” and “We Made It”. The tracklists theme is noticeably apart from his previous album released in 2019, “Jesus Is King.”

After Yeezy posted the announcement, West’s label Def Jam posted on Twitter confirming the release of the 10th studio album on July 23. The label also previously teased the album on Twitter with the post, “YZY SZN.”

His previous album “Jesus Is King” in 2019, have met with mixed reviews from music critics albeit being commercially successful and also being compared heavily from his previous material, “My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy.”

His 10th studio album “Donda” is named after his late mother Donda West who died in 2007 due to complications from a cosmetic surgery. The album’s themes and materials represent coming to terms with grief and loss due to his experience dealing with his mother’s death and his recent divorce with his wife of seven years, TV reality star Kim Kardashian.

The Listening Event

The premiere of the album coincides with a listening event held on July 22 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium which also live streamed at the same time via Apple. The location of the premiere is very symbolic in the Black community since it was previously a site for Friendship Baptist Church which was founded by former slaves in 1862.

In the listening event, the audience were tense and unclear about what they were showing up for. Yeezy arrived two hours late, clad in red suit armor featuring a Yeezy boots, nude mask and a red puffer which make it seem like he is preparing for a battle. The venue was lit up white while Kanye stood out in red.

The listening event featured most of the tracks in the album and sometimes interspersed with the posthumous voice of West’s late mother Donda West. The audience was also clad in merch featuring Kanye’s mother as a child almost as if the audience is at a funeral programme of black people.

A Tribute To His Late Mother

The album also featured Jay-Z who recently reunited with Yeezy, Pusha-T, Travis Scott, Lil Baby, Baby Keem, Jeremih, Lil Durk, Roddy Riich, Pop Smoke, and more.

West left the venue as quickly as he arrived and never spoke a word which is surprising since many fans are very acquainted with the rapper’s enthusiastic performances in the past which left them disappointed.

However, the album and the event’s theme is clear, it is a tribute to Yeezy’s late mother. It is about identity, heritage, familial love, grief and loss. It is a somber creative masterpiece which deviates from his previous egocentric works and a love letter to being vulnerable and dealing with raw emotions.
