It definitely took everyone by surprise when Magic Showcase 2021 unveiled their most astonishing event to date. If you missed it, Wizards announced all of their entire release schedule and some of the brand-new set of cards that fans can look forward to for the end of 2021 and beyond.
You can only expect to hear the latest and the biggest news on entertainment, tech, and games, here on the straits times. Let’s get on with the latest buzz!
Universes Beyond: the crossovers we never thought we’d need!
That’s the thing, we’re not just getting one, not two, but four new Secret Lair cards. If you don’t know how big of a deal this is for many fans, imagine getting your favorite character from a certain franchise and getting it to go against other existing Magic: The Gathering creatures. That sure is going to be an epic ride.
Admittedly, this isn’t the first time that Wizards have leaned towards the idea of multiple universes crossing over. Last year, the Secret Lair: The Walking Dead set of cards were highly controversial and got a mixed bag of reaction from fans.
This year’s Magic Showcase couldn’t be any different. Except, maybe that this time, there’s a bunch more crossover franchises to expect that no one saw coming. Four different franchises across different entertainment markets have been announced to join the Magic: The Gathering universe.
These include Lord of the Rings, Warhammer 40,000, Street Fighter, and of all things, Fortnite. Heck, if Fortnite, a game that has a multiverse of its own, can finally cross the universe with Wizards’ multiversal franchise, one could hope we could also get Final Fantasy into the mix. Just imagine how cool it would be to see Cloud sweeping creatures from the Magic universe.
Lord of the Rings
Wizards finally getting a chance to make a partnership with a franchise that makes so much sense is finally here. No other franchise could be better mashed with Magic: The Gathering than the magical world of The Lord of the Rings. The franchise is brimmed with so many mystical beings, as well as the popular wizard himself, Gandalf.
This is perhaps the best and most fitting collaboration the company has made to keep things fresh for the fans of both franchises. For many fans, it only makes sense to bring two brands with the same nature together.
Wizards’ desire to create a whole slew of brand-new and unique cards has brought the popular miniature wargame Warhammer 40,000 to the table. While certainly not entirely the same niche as Magic: The Gathering in terms of theme, they share the same target audience: hobbyists.
With Warhammer 40K’s addition, the world of Magic: The Gathering is now a must-have for these people who are extremely fond of collecting such valuable collaborations.
As part of Street Fighter’s 35th anniversary, the popular fighting game franchise has made a partnership with Magic: The Gathering to bring a new set of playing cards to the table. The Magic universe has been set to grow into a much larger universe with a variety of fascinating roster of new characters to join the war.
According to Wizards, they will be releasing plenty of cards unlike the ill-fated The Walking Dead run. There will be exclusive cards as to be expected.
And the last popular IP to have made a collaboration with Wizards is none other than Fortnite. It’s nice to see Street Fighter into the mix and Fortnite sure is a very surprising and intriguing addition, to say the least. The popular battle royale shooter game has now made it to the trading card game niche as well.
What better way to venture into uncharted territory but with the market leader? Wizards Inc. certainly knows its thing and this newfound partnership with the ever-so-popular Epic Games hit will certainly be a win-win situation for both companies.
