Asiaone Ryan Reynolds Free Guy

Free Guy is Ryan Reynolds’ long-delayed action-sci-fi comedy flick. The 44-year old actor also believed that the fans will love the hidden cameos scattered throughout the film.

The actor top-billed the upcoming comedy movie and noted the certain little elements will be popular among fans. We at Asiaone break down the story for you in the article below.

Full of easter eggs

When asked about his favorite part in the movie by CinemaBlend, the actor answered gleefully. He said, “For me, it’s the Easter eggs because there are so many Easter eggs in the movie. There are so many little hidden cameos, there are so many moments. I love movies that acknowledge and play with the cultural landscape, and Free Guy does that in ways that are unexpected and expected, I think.”

The actor of the popular comic book anti-hero Deadpool also noted that the movie is a “fastball of joy” and he assumes that the audience will leave with a smile on their face.

“The movie’s a fastball of joy, and that’s what I wish for people right now; is to just have a couple of hours of pure joy in their lives and leave a theatre the same way I used to leave movie theatres. Just grinning from ear to ear at the experience,” Ryan added.

A different action-comedy film

Jodie Comer, Ryan’s co-actor in the film described the film as more than just ‘an action-comedy.’

“I think for me as well, it’s like ‘an action-comedy, and everyone thinks, ‘Oh I know what that’s gonna be.’

“I think this film has an undertone and it has a message without the kind of forcing it down people’s throats, like, ‘This is what you should take from this movie.’ You end up coming away from it actually really moved, and feeling very connected,” the actress said.

The actor himself is a comedian

We all know that Ryan Reynolds has an incredible sense of humor in real life, it is evident in his own Youtube channel where he regularly posts comedy skits that mostly have dark humor elements on them.

The actor is already an established performer long before he played everyone’s Merc with a Mouth, Deadpool. His A-list status was cemented when he starred as the anti-hero parodying his previous roles and commenting on everything by breaking the fourth wall.

Among those misses is his role in the abhorred superhero film, Green Lantern, R.I.P.D. and as Wade Wilson himself in the previous X-Men Origins: Wolverine in which the latter film misused his character. However, he compensates for those misses with a lot of hits such as The Hitman’s Bodyguard, The Change-Up, 6 Underground, and of course, the Deadpool series.

The plot of the movie

The plot and concept of the film are not far-fetched and we already saw some elements of them in other sci-fi films such as Wreck-It Ralph and Serenity however, the film took it to the next level.

Reynolds played the character of Guy, an NPC or non-playable character where he lived and worked in the Free City, unaware that he is a background character in a video game. When he had an existential crisis when Comer’s character told him the truth, he eventually decided to become the hero. When the creator of the game decides to shut down the game, he decides to save the world he loves and proves that he can be a hero.

The film also stars Joe Keery (Stranger Things), Lil Rel Howery (Get Out, Bird Box), and multi-faceted Taika Waititi (What We Do in the Shadows, Jojo Rabbit, Thor: Ragnarok).

Free Guy is the only greenlit movie that the 20th Century Fox Studios spared to continue in production before rebranding into 20th Century Studios due to Disney owning Fox. The film is set to be released exclusively in theaters on August 13, 2021.
