Sony Delays Morbius to April Release As Omicron Cases Rise

Sony Pictures, the studio behind Spider-Man films, has delayed the theatrical release of the superhero film Morbius from January to April 1, according to their official statement on January 3.

Morbius stars Jared Leto as the titular character, the film was delayed several times due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. The most recent release date was supposed to be on January 28.

We will elaborate more about this film in this Singapore news.

A blow to the movie industry

Straits times

As for the operators of movie theaters, the postponement was a disappointment, considering that the movie theater industry is starting to recover from the closures that were the result of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Recently, several theaters such as Cinemark Holdings Inc, AMC Entertainment and Cineworld Group have been rejoicing the blockbuster ticket revenue for another Sony Marvel movie Spider-Man: No Way Home, which is a global success.

Although No Way Home is still being played in many theaters, movie operators already have a lineup of other major film titles scheduled for release until the end of the first quarter of 2022.

According to Sony, the major cause of the delay is due to the increasing cases of the Covid-19 Omicron variant which is currently ravaging worldwide. This new variant has boosted concerns over the fear of audiences to go teh theaters during the pandemic.

Sony Spider-verse

Aside from Venom: Let There Be Carnage and Spider-Man: No Way Home, Morbius is one of the highly anticipated Sony Marvel films of date.

The development of a Morbius film was already made years ago, since the Sony and Disney deal to use Spider-Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe prevented the character from being used in other film franchises.

Sony then announced to use other characters on their arsenal related to Spider-Man to be used in their Sony Spider-Man Universe. This resulted in the development of Venom films and the announcement of Morbius.

Synopsis

To the uninitiated, Michael Morbius is a character created in 1971 by Gill Kane and Roy Thomas. He was supposed to be a villain for Spider-Man but was transformed into an anti-hero with a tragic past.

Possessing an unusual blood disease, Morbius stated that he can reverse his condition via an experiment. Having done the deed, it certainly cured his disease but also turned him into a human and vampire hybrid with supernatural powers.

Trailers

The teaser for the film was released way back two years and the recent trailer mentioned his new abilities. A few of these are – super strength, speed, agility, enhanced senses, and flight. Having possessed these abilities, it is a big question if he will use it for good or evil in the same vein as Eddie Brock’s Venom.

The old trailer presented Michael Keaton’s Vulture from the Marvel Cinematic Universe. This has led fans to speculate if this film is part of the ever-growing universe that started in Iron Man in 2008.

Jared Leto, the main star of the film and played the titular character is no stranger to being a villain in a superhero movie. In 2017, he played the iconic Batman villain Joker in the original Suicide Squad film. However, his performance of the character was criticized and the film itself was lambasted albeit gaining a huge profit in the box office.

This prompted that Morbius could be a redemption film for Jared Leto in the world of superhero films. Having a long list of iconic performances and accolades, Leto’s portrayal of Morbius is definitely worth watching.

Conclusion

The film also stars Jare Harris, Adria Arjona, Al Madrigal, Michael Keaton and Tyrese Gibson. Nothing is much known about the plot of the film other than what has already shown in the trailers but it will definitely pull off a surprise twist.
